What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the surgery that removes localized fat from specific areas of the body —such as the abdomen, the flanks, the back or the arms— to improve your silhouette. There is one important thing to know: it is not a surgery for losing weight, it is a surgery for shaping the figure. It is meant for people at a stable weight with that stubborn fat that does not go away with diet or exercise. For safety reasons, the amount of fat removed always has a limit.

Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is not for losing weight and it is not for everyone. It is recommended when you are at a stable weight with localized fat that does not respond to diet or exercise, and your skin has a good ability to adapt. These are the points we look at to know whether this is your moment:

How do you know if you are a good candidate?

Stable weight

You are close to your usual weight, with no big ups and downs in recent months.

Localized fat that will not go away

You have deposits in specific areas that don’t go away even though you watch what you eat and exercise.

Skin with good elasticity

Your skin can adapt well to the new contour. If there’s a lot of laxity, it’s sometimes worth adding another procedure.

Good general health

No uncontrolled illnesses, and with clearance from the internal medicine physician so you can have surgery with peace of mind.

Not smoking, or being able to quit

Smoking affects healing; quitting before and after surgery helps a great deal.

Time for your recovery

Being able to wear the compression garment, go to your drainage massages, and give yourself the days of rest.

Patient Process: 4 Stages of Liposuction

Consultation with Measurements and Marking

It all starts with a calm conversation. Dr. Henríquez examines you standing, takes measurements, reviews your skin and the areas you’d like to improve, and takes photographs in the office studio. Together we define what result is possible for your body. You leave with a clear plan and a written quote.

Preparation with Your Safety First

Before surgery you get your pre-op tests done and an internist confirms that everything is in order. The anesthesiologist evaluates you as well. Only when everything is ready and cleared do we schedule your surgery. You receive clear instructions for the days beforehand.

The Day of Your Surgery

Before going into the operating room, the doctor marks the areas to be treated on your body while you are standing. The surgery is performed at a high-complexity clinic, under general anesthesia and with a complete team. Afterward you spend some time under observation —sometimes overnight— so that you are looked after from the very first moment.

Supported Recovery

You go home with a compression garment that supports you through your recovery. The first check-ups are a few days later. A key part is the lymphatic drainage massages, done at the office with our trusted aesthetician, and Dr. Henríquez follows you closely until your result settles.

Recovery

Liposuction Recovery: What to Expect Day by Day

01
01

First days Swelling and the Compression Garment at All Times

You wear the compression garment at all times and the treated areas feel swollen; that is normal. Some fluid may drain from the small incisions during the first few days. You rest, but you move a little in bed to protect your circulation. The discomfort is well controlled with what the doctor prescribes.

02
02

First week Drains and More Mobility

The lymphatic drainage massages begin, key to bringing down the swelling. You move better and better and the bruises start to lighten. You keep wearing the compression garment almost all the time. You are not back at work or to an intense social life yet.

03
03

The Following Weeks — Back to Work

The swelling goes down a good deal, although some is still noticeable. You gradually get back to your social life and office work, and to longer walks. You keep wearing the compression garment and the drains, and you still do not do intense exercise or lift weight.

The Months After — The Figure Becomes Defined

The swelling keeps going down and your new figure looks better and better. You gradually return to exercise, as your doctor instructs. The result finishes settling over the following months.

Post-Op Care Specific
to Liposuction

Taking good care of yourself after surgery has an enormous influence on the result. The first days and weeks are the ones that call for the most careful attention, especially the compression garment and the drains. We give you everything in writing, but here are the key points:

  • Wear your compression garment at all times. Day and night during the first few weeks; take it off only to shower. It shapes the areas and helps your skin adapt.
  • Don’t skip your lymphatic drainage sessions. They are key massages for reducing swelling and preventing firm areas. They are done at the office, several times a week at first.
  • Drink plenty of water. It helps flush out fluid and helps you recover better.
  • Move gently at first. No sudden bending and no straining for the first few weeks, so you do not shift the compression garment or strain the treated areas.
  • Pause hard exercise. No weights and no impact for a few weeks. You go back to it little by little and with the doctor’s approval.
  • Protect the scars from the sun. They are very small, but the sun can darken them. Use sunscreen for several months.
  • Keep the incisions clean. Gentle washing with a mild soap. No soaking them in standing water (pools, hot tubs) for a while.
  • No cigarettes. Not before and not during recovery: it affects healing and how the skin retracts.

Expected Results of Liposuction: A Harmonious Figure

A good liposuction result isn’t a catalog silhouette: it’s a more harmonious, more defined version of your own body. And there’s something important that we say honestly: a large part of the result also depends on you, on maintaining your weight and your habits after surgery.

Surgery shapes your figure; you maintain it with your habits.

It Changes the Shape, Not the Weight

Liposuction shapes your contour; the scale may barely move. What changes are the inches and the shape of the treated areas.

The Result Holds with Your Weight

The fat that is removed does not come back to that area, but if you gain weight, the fat left in your body can grow. Keeping your weight is what preserves the result.

Very Small Scars

They’re made through tiny incisions, hidden in natural folds, which fade with proper care and sun protection.

The Result Settles Over Time

You notice the change soon, but the definitive figure arrives once all the swelling goes down, over the course of months. With high-definition liposuction, the definition shows better with time.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction

That is a very fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your case. The price changes according to the number of areas, the technique (traditional, liposculpture, high-definition lipo, lipo 360), the medical team and the clinic. Also, under the guidelines of the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery, prices are not published online. At your consultation you receive a clear, written estimate, made to fit you.

Liposuction removes fat from one or several areas to reduce volume. Liposculpture goes a step further: that fat is put to use and reinjected into another area where you want more volume, such as the buttocks. That way you reduce and augment at the same time, with your own fat. High-definition liposuction adds another level: bringing out the shape of the muscles.

Liposuction is not for losing weight, so the scale may barely move. What changes is your figure: the inches and the shape of the treated areas. For safety reasons, the amount of fat removed always has a limit. What matters is not how much you weigh, but how your contour looks and feels.

The fat that is removed does not come back to that area, but if you gain weight, the fat left in your body can grow and change the result. That is why liposuction is recommended for people with a stable weight: keeping up your habits is what preserves the figure you achieve.

It’s done through tiny incisions, hidden in natural folds and inconspicuous areas. They close with one or two small stitches and, with good care and sun protection, they end up barely noticeable. Every skin heals differently; if you’re prone to keloids, it’s managed with special care.
