What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is the surgery that removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin so the breast regains a comfortable proportion with your body. Besides reducing, it lifts: I reposition the remaining tissue and move the areola to its correct position. It is one of the few cosmetic surgeries that solves a real physical problem.
Very large breasts put weight on the neck and the back, leave bra marks on the shoulders, irritate the skin in the fold and limit exercise. That is why many of my patients talk more about the relief than about the aesthetic change.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Here what matters is not only the size, but how much it is affecting your daily life. These are the points I go over with you to know whether this is your moment:

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Your breasts are disproportionately large

The size of the bust is not in harmony with your body build.

You have frequent physical discomfort

You may experience back, neck, or shoulder pain because of the weight of your breasts.

Physical activities feel uncomfortable for you

Breast volume can limit exercise and some everyday activities.

You have irritation or marks on your skin

The bra may leave grooves in the shoulders or cause discomfort in the breast folds.

You maintain a stable weight

A stable body weight contributes to more satisfying, longer-lasting results.

You are looking for greater comfort and body proportion

You want a lighter, more balanced bust that improves your day-to-day well-being.

Your Process: 4 Stages of Your Surgery

Consultation and Surgical Plan

It all starts with a calm conversation. I assess the volume, the position of the areola and the quality of your skin, and we talk about your symptoms. Together we define how much to reduce so that it’s in proportion with your body.

Pre-Surgical Preparation

The internist evaluates you and orders the tests that apply, including breast studies appropriate for your age. I give you written instructions for the days beforehand and for stopping medications.

The Surgery

I remove the tissue and skin that are left over, reshape what remains to give it form and projection, and reposition the areola while preserving its blood supply and its nerves. The breast ends up smaller and also higher.

Follow-Up Visits and Monitoring

I accompany you at scheduled check-ups for the dressings, to review how you’re healing and to follow your scars for as many months as needed.

Recovery

What to Expect from Your Breast Reduction: Day by Day

01
01

First days Immediate Relief from the Weight

Many patients notice from day one that the weight on their shoulders is gone. You go home with a surgical bra and with discomfort that is manageable with the pain medication I prescribe.

02
02

First weeks Gradually Back to Your Routine

The swelling subsides and you return to light activities. I ask you to avoid raising your arms above your shoulders and lifting weight until I clear you.

03
03

First Months — The Shape Becomes Defined

The tissue finishes settling and the definitive shape appears. At first the breast looks higher than it will end up, and that is expected.

04
04

The Months After — The Scars Mature

They go from pink to light slowly, over several months. It is the part that asks for the most patience and the one where I stay closest to you.

Post-Op Care Specific
to Breast Reduction

The relief comes quickly, but the shape and the scars are built over the following months. These are my instructions:

  • Always wear your surgical bra. Day and night, for as long as I tell you.
  • Don’t raise your arms or lift weight. During the first few weeks, until I clear you at your follow-up.
  • Sleep on your back. Never on your side or on your stomach while the tissue settles.
  • Protect the scars from the sun. Strict protection for months, or they will stay permanently dark.
  • Use what I prescribe for your scar. Silicone creams or sheets, depending on how you are progressing.
  • Walk from day one. Short, frequent walks to prevent blood clots.
  • No smoking. It is the factor that most compromises healing in this surgery.
  • Let me know if anything worries you. Increasing pain, fever, drainage, or a change in the color of the areola: call me.

What to Expect from the Result of Your Breast Reduction: Proportion and Relief

A good breast reduction result is measured by two things: a breast in proportion with your body and a back that has stopped hurting. In this surgery the functional side weighs as much as the aesthetic one. The scar is the price and I want you to know that from the start. The vast majority of my patients tell me it was worth it, but it’s a decision you have to make with the full picture.

What people notice isn’t the surgery: it’s that you’re moving again without carrying weight.

Real Physical Relief

Neck and back pain, bra strap marks and irritation in the fold usually improve noticeably, often from the very first days.

It Reduces and Lifts at the Same Time

Beyond removing volume, I reshape the tissue and reposition the areola. The breast ends up smaller and also in a better position.

Stable Result

The tissue I remove doesn’t come back. It holds for years, as long as your weight stays stable.

What Breast Reduction Does Not Do

It does not correct posture on its own if there is already an established spine problem, and it does not stop the breast from aging. Weight changes or a later pregnancy can alter the result.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Reduction

That is a very fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your case, on the volume to be removed and on the technique it requires. Under the guidelines of the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery, prices are not published online. At your consultation you receive a clear, written estimate.

It can affect it, and that is something we have to talk about frankly before operating. The techniques I use preserve the connection of the tissue to the areola, which favors breastfeeding being possible, but I cannot guarantee you that it will be. If you have plans for a pregnancy in the near future, we talk about whether it is better to wait.

In most cases yes, because the technique is designed to protect the nerves of the areola. It is common for sensitivity to change during the first months — sometimes more, sometimes less — and to gradually return to normal. In some cases a permanent change can remain, and that is why I warn you about it beforehand.

They depend on how much volume has to be removed. They usually run around the areola and downward, and in large reductions also in the breast fold. At first they are pink and over the months they lighten. It is the part that weighs most in the decision, so I explain it and show it to you before surgery.

A breast lift only raises and repositions the tissue you already have, without removing volume. A reduction does remove tissue, in addition to lifting. If your breast has dropped but you like its size, it is a lift. If the size itself is weighing on you and your back hurts, it is a reduction.
