What Is a Lip Lift?

Over the years, the space between the base of the nose and the lip grows longer, and the upper lip gradually tucks in until it almost disappears when you smile.

The lip lift corrects that: I remove a small portion of skin just below the nose and lift the lip, so that its pink part shows again without adding any filler.

Who Is a Candidate for a Lip Lift?

They are subtle, permanent procedures, and not everyone needs them. Often the right solution is a different one. These are the points I go over with you to know whether it’s your moment:

Who Is a Candidate for a Lip Lift?

Minimum age with complete facial development

Generally 16 to 18 years old; before that the cartilage and bone keep growing and the result can vary.

Realistic, well-defined goals

The patient understands which changes are possible given their anatomy and which are not.

Non-smoker, or willing to quit tobacco

Smoking affects healing and increases complications.

Good general health

No decompensated cardiovascular disease, clotting disorders or active infections.

Valid reasons that are your own

The decision comes from the patient, not from outside pressure from a partner, family or social circle.

Availability for the recovery period

Enough time to follow the rest period, the check-ups and the specific care instructions.

Your Process: 4 Stages of Your Surgery

Consultation for Your Face

It all starts with a calm conversation. I measure the distance between your nose and your lip, assess how much lip shows when you smile and at rest, and review the position of your eyebrows and the quality of your skin.

Design and Marking

I mark precisely how much skin I am going to remove. This is where the result is decided: too much and the expression looks forced; too little and the change doesn’t show. I make that calculation on your anatomy, not on a standard measurement.

The Surgery

I remove the marked portion of skin and close in layers, protecting the muscle and keeping the suture hidden in the natural fold. In the brow lift, I reposition the tail of the eyebrow through a concealed incision.

Follow-Up Visits and Monitoring

I see you to remove the stitches and then at scheduled check-ups to accompany the maturing of the scar, which is the part that takes the longest.

Recovery

What to Expect from Your Lip Lift: Day by Day

01
01

First days Swelling and Stitches

Your lip looks swollen and a bit lifted, more than it will end up being. That is normal and it is unsettling at first, so I warn you about it from the consultation.

02
02

First week Stitch Removal

I remove the stitches in the office and the scar is left as a fine line under the nose, still pink. The swelling clearly begins to go down.

03
03

First Weeks — Back to Your Routine

Most patients get back to their normal life within a few days. Your expression settles and your smile stops feeling stiff.

04
04

The Months After — The Scar Matures

The line gradually fades until it blends with the natural crease at the base of the nose. It is a slow process and I am with you while it lasts.

Post-Op Care Specific
to Lip Lift

The key to these surgeries is caring for the scar, because it is in a visible area of the face. These are my instructions:

  • Protect the scar from the sun. Sunscreen every day for months, so it does not darken.
  • Don’t stretch your lip on purpose. Avoid wide, forced expressions during the first few days.
  • Soft diet at first. So you do not pull on the area while it heals.
  • Sleep with your head elevated. It helps the inflammation go down faster.
  • No cigarettes. Nothing damages a facial scar more.
  • Avoid intense exercise. During the first few days, until I clear you at your follow-up.
  • Use what I prescribe for the scar. Silicone creams or sheets, depending on how you are progressing.
  • Let me know if anything worries you. Increasing pain, redness that does not go away, or the wound separating: call me.

Cases of my own patients who authorized the use of their images. Every face starts from different proportions, so these cases are a general reference and not a promise of results.

What to Expect from the Result of Your Lip Lift: Millimeters That Show

In these surgeries we work in millimeters, and that is where the whole difference lies. Well calculated, the result is a lip that shows again and a more rested look, without anyone knowing you had surgery. Poorly calculated, the expression looks forced and the teeth stay permanently exposed. That is why the planning beforehand is the most important part of the procedure.

What shows isn’t the surgery: it is that your expression looks fresher.

Permanent Result

Unlike fillers or botulinum toxin, there is nothing to repeat here. The structural change stays.

Hidden Scar

The lip lift incision goes in the crease at the base of the nose. Over time it fades and becomes hard to distinguish.

Subtle Change

The goal is for your expression to show, not the surgery. Anyone who doesn’t know you had surgery will only see that you look better.

What They Do Not Replace

A lip lift doesn’t add volume to the lip: that is what fillers do. And a brow lift doesn’t correct advanced laxity of the forehead or excess eyelid skin, which call for a different surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Lip Lift Surgery

That is a very fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends on your case, on the type of anesthesia and on whether only one is done or both together. Under the guidelines of the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery, prices are not published online. At your consultation you receive a clear, written estimate.

No, they do different things. Filler adds volume; a lip lift shortens the distance between the nose and the lip so that more lip shows, without adding anything. If your problem is that your upper lip disappeared over the years, more filler does not solve it and sometimes makes it worse. At your consultation I tell you which one is right for you.

Yes. It’s a structural change: I remove skin and that skin doesn’t come back. The face keeps aging normally, but the proportion I correct is maintained. That’s why the prior calculation has to be exact, and that’s why I don’t do it if you’re not convinced.

No. Botulinum toxin can slightly lift the tail of the brow by relaxing certain muscles, and it is temporary. Surgery repositions the brow in a stable way and achieves a greater change. When the drooping is mild I usually start with the toxin; when it is real, surgery is what is called for.

Yes, and it often makes sense to do so: one works on the upper third of the face and the other on the lower third, so together they give a more harmonious result. They are also combined with blepharoplasty or with a facelift. At your consultation we define what’s best to do and in what order.
